The King of the Monsters is also king of the box office.

“Godzilla” obliterated the competition with a $38.5 million Stateside opening on Friday, the largest debut day of the year. This includes $9.3 million from Thursday night screenings. At $6.2 million, the creature feature also earned 2014′s biggest Imax opening.

The Warner Bros.-Legendary Pictures reboot of the Japanese classic is on track for a much-higher-than-anticipated $98 million this weekend, which would be the best opening of the year so far.

This also means the tentpole could top the openings of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” which launched to $95 million and $91.6 million, respectively.

If that figure holds, it will also mark the highest grossing debut for a monster movie to date, ahead of the last record holder, “The Lost World: Jurassic Park,” which opened to $72 million in 1997.

“Godzilla” hauled in an additional $22.3 million from foreign markets on Friday, bringing its international cume to $43 million. It’s no. 1 in the U.K. ($4.7 million two-day total), Russia ($3.6 million), Mexico ($3.2 million), Germany ($2.9 million) and Australia ($2.6 million).

Gareth Edwards’ “Godzilla” is undoing the damage done by Sony’s 1998 big-budget disaster. Roland Emmerich’s pic starring Matthew Broderick opened to lackluster reviews and grossed only $6 million more Stateside than its $130 million production budget (it hauled $380 million worldwide). In fact, the last three Godzilla movies have flopped domestically, with “Godzilla 1985” grossing $4 million and “Godzilla 2000” making $10 million.

The $160 million blockbuster is the last film that WB is co-financing with Legendary — its producing partner of eight years. “Godzilla” is their first big-budget collaboration following last summer’s mixed bag “Pacific Rim.”

Legendary, which financed 75% of “Godzilla,” looks to be turning a new leaf following its recent trouble with the monster genre at the U.S. box office. “Pacific Rim’s” meager takings (it made $102 million domestic on a $190 million production budget) followed Bryan Singer’s “Jack the Giant Slayer” disappointment, another WB release.

The pic starring Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen is playing in 3,952 theaters. It received mainly positive reviews, earning a B+ CinemaScorea and 73% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

GODZILLA is looking to have a fantastic box office debut, potentially the film could land 100 million on its outing. Which is a mind-blowing debut for our Toho icon. Box-office trackers are changing their tunes quickly and believe GODZILLA could in fact dominate the likes of Captain America and The Amazing Spider Man 2. If this turns out to hit home, GODZILLA's future will be looking atomically bright!

We want this new generation of GODZILLA and this new age of kaiju to flourish, we want sequels, and we want Godzilla to stay and survive. Currently GODZILLA 2014 is standing at $126, 188,000 domestically at the box office. It needs at the very least, a simple $11 million for it to top GINO's domestic run. Which was slightly over $136 million.

It's Memorial Day weekend, and despite X-Men being the leading movie of the week, I do believe GODZILLA will rack in enough profit during the next two days to finally surpass GINO. If not by next Monday, than certainly by next Tuesday.

After that, GODZILLA will have two (or less than two) weeks left in its domestic run before concluding on its final box office run in the U.S After that, the main focus will be on its international run. Keep note that GODZILLA has been a success, but keep supporting the film if you can! I'm not sure if we can make 200 million, but we can at least beat GINO and try to make back this film's budget!

Update:

Folks! GODZILLA has officially surpassed GINO! GINO tapped out at 136,314,294 in its eight week run back in 1998 domestically. Its budget was 130 million. In that sense, GINO was successful financially.

GODZILLA 2014 has officially destroyed GINO's entire domestic run, coming in with 148,773,000 domestically for its second week. GODZILLA, in its third week, could entirely make up its 160 million budget cost before the end of it. Memorial Day should give it a helpful boost in the box office, bringing the film to 156 million, extremely close to the 160 million budget from box office analyst .

With that in mind, GODZILLA is looking to finish at 200,000 million or 220 million domestically. A solid hit

Overseas box office numbers have not yet been updated with their new total, they will be tomorrow or sometime this week. So watch out for that!

Fantastic News! GODZILLA has officially made back its budget yesterday, bringing it home domestically to a current $160,584,332.

International Numbers have been updated as well: $166,600,000, bringing a current worldwide total of:
$327,184,332!!!

Now remember, GODZILLA still has several domestic weeks in the box office and theaters, so its run isn't over just yet. Go out and continue to enjoy the film and support its success!

Internationally, one must remember, GODZILLA has yet to touch down in China and Japan.
June 13th will be China's turn in helping the king, while the month after it will be Japan in July.
So the film will no doubt continue make more profit overseas!

I imagine that in China Godzilla will be very successful, perhaps even better than here, since Pacific Rim was very positively accepted there... not so sure about Japan though, can't really be sure if they'd like the new take on one of their most iconic film stars.

Agreed, Japan is a strange variable, I hope it does well enough though. If anything at least they'll see we got it right this time.

Hell yes! GODZILLA is doing quite well in the box office! I hope GODZILLA makes it to 200 million, if not at least 190 million domestically.

I'm not worried about internationally, Tull Thomas said so long as the film hits 350 million worldwide(Or 380) than it will break even and turn a profit. I think we're well on our way to that very soon!

You're close OniGoji, but he said it would have to be 450 million worldwide to break even. EDIT: My bad! It was 350 million, in which that case, GODZILLA has a least broken even with a bit more thus far.

Folks! GODZILLA has jumped to 174,657,000 domestically! Quite a punch from Friday's tango at the theaters and box office. We're close to reaching 200,000 million domestically! Keep pushing!

We're close to reaching 400,000 worldwide! By the end of this week, and hopefully with a little luck, we'll hit 200,000,000 domestically. China won't be tapped in until June 13, so we won't have a major increase until then. Hopefully Godzilla will continue to pull its international weight before moving into deeper eastern territory. Box Office Update: GODZILLA is currently $380,863,000 worldwide!
Domestically since yesterday, GODZILLA has been updated and is currently at $180,863,000! We're getting closer to 200,000 million, fans keep supporting the film! Godzilla can reach 200,000 million!

Meanwhile, international numbers have not been updated, GODZILLA still has 200,000 million even since its last update June 1st. It's safe to assume that by its next update, GODZILLA should be brought to a smashing 400,000 million before China enters the fray. Don't expect anything until maybe later this week.

Which reminds me, this upcoming Friday, CHINA will finally have GODZILLA released in their theaters. With any luck, CHINA will give GODZILLA a powerful box office boost.

Box Office Update:

Godzilla's currently stomps at $185,043,000 domestically, while internationally, Godzilla stomps at 208,700,000.

Worldwide total currently: $393,743,000

Godzilla jumped to a nice 4 million plus for the domestic side, perhaps now that school is over and summer beginning, the film might have a small surge of profit increases now and then. As for international waters, Godzilla has boosted over 8 million dollars. Either way, we're close to 400 million worldwide!

Chances are either side won't have us hit 400 million by ourselves before China. Which isn't a bad, at the very least we'll be close to it domestically if things keep pushing forward. But either way, GODZILLA will definitely have a strong boost thanks to China. Not sure how long it will last, but with luck, for a long while before Transformers.

One way or another it'll definitely make $400 million, whether or not it's during it's oversea theatrical run is the real question; I do hold out a small hope that when it's released onto DVD it'll make $500 million!

True, no matter what, the film will make $400 million this weekend, and it will make more then that when domestics finally hit $200,000 million. I see $500-600 million due to China alone, max worldwide gross being either 600 million or 700 million when Japan hits.

Well folks, GODZILLA has officially crossed the 400,000 million line! Even more firmly, it completely towers over the entire box office run of Pacific Rim with a current worldwide total of $426,416,000!

On more obvious news, GODZILLA has opened in CHINA, and thus far has had a monstrous rampaging hit!

UPDATE, SATURDAY 10:55 AM PT: Godzilla continued its domination of the China box office on Saturday with a flash estimate of $14.8M from approximately 9,000 screens. The No. 1 film in the market this weekend gave Warner Bros its biggest ever Saturday (and 2nd day) results in the territory. After bowing to $10.9M on Friday, the Warner/Legendary film now has a local cume of $25.8M, according to the studio. The international total as of today is an estimated $237.4M. More numbers and analysis to come tomorrow.

PREVIOUS, FRIDAY 12:47 PM PT:Warner Bros and Legendary‘s Godzilla roared into the world’s second biggest box office market today with a monstrous $10.9M bow. The Gareth Edwards-directed creature feature is playing on an estimated 9,000 screens, more than a third of the nation’s moviegoing real estate. The bow marks Warner Bros’ biggest opening day of all time in the territory and is the biggest opening day there for 2014, according to the studio. The Lizard opened internationally in May with $103.4M overseas. Its domestic open was $93.1M; in North America it now has a cume of about $187.5M. Internationally, its cume as of last weekend was $208.7M in 63 markets.

CHINA helped us cross into the 400,000 million mark, and has been making great business for the King! If the movie's legs stand strongly, we could cross the 500,000 million mark by the end of the upcoming week! So here's to hoping!

Domestically right now, GODZILLA stands at $189,016,000! We're close to reaching $200 million, but we still need to keep pushing! It's Father's Day weekend, see if you can push for a nice outing at the movies to see Godzilla with your old man! And if he's not up for it, Hell, see the movie again for yourself!

In terms of hitting the big 200 million, I predict that the movie will cross the line in the next two weeks. Totaling around 7 weeks if you calculate, around the same amount of time as The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It'll be cutting close, because Transformers opens at the last week of this month. But with any luck, the king of the monsters will be able to tear his way to the finish line! It's going to be a struggle, but we can prevail!

WHAT!?! I thought it was coming out July 27th?! Wow, kind of good news, kind of bad news; on the one hand it'd pretty much eclipse Godzilla's remaining domestic run [though that'll be over pretty soon anyway, and I figure China and Japan should be able to get him over the 500 mark on their own!]...

On the other hand, I've got six words that'll guarantee Transformers: Age of Extinction will be awesome; IT'S GOT FREAKING DINOBOTS IN IT!!!  

True, GODZILLA's domestic run will be over soon enough. Although right now, so long as its ends on 200 million, than it can be established that it had a successfully great domestic run.

And while I don't enjoy Micheal Bay's Transformers all that much, I know for sure that I'll love Age of Extinction, DINOBOTS RULE!!! GO GRIMLOCK!

HELL YES!!!! GODZILLA's chances are quite firm in reaching 200 million, all we have to do is keep supporting the film and seeing it in theaters! We can ground a sequel and show that GODZILLA still rules in America!

I'm not worried about international waters, they are usually much more successful and studios usually look at a global scale to gauge majority of a film's worth. And thus far, GODZILLA still has draw and appeal ^_^

GODZILLA as of today, has reached $191,301,000!!! Simply put, we're less than 9 million before finally crossing the 200 million finish line!

Now, the film will be hitting its domestic finish soon enough, generally the box office gives a film a few months before concluding on its domestic total. Generally three and a half months. But the movie does have a fair bit of time to cross the 200 million line. I predict the rest of this week and next being the key weeks that GODZILLA crushes it at 200 million domestically. Keep supporting the film guys!

As of NOW, from a recent small update from Variety:
“Godzilla” has now scared up $440 million worldwide, surpassing the $380 million figure that its backers said it needed to break even.

Alright! GODZILLA has surpassed the break even mark, now to pull in more of the delicious profits.

UPDATE:

GODZILLA currently sits at $194,915,000 domestically! Sunday has yet to be calculated in today, so expect to see the film hit the big 195 million mark!

Internationally, the king stomps at a $282,400,000 million mark, making a worldwide total of $477,315,000!!!

By the end of this week, GODZILLA might finally stomp into the 200 million circle, depending on the sum from yesterday's showings. China will no doubt help push Godzilla closer to the 500 million circle, and indeed, they could even help our monster god cross over it during this week or the next.

Things are shaping up nicely, let's hope to see this through!

MILD UPDATE:

GODZILLA currently sits at $196,085,100 domestically at the Box Office, I had expected the film to be near 199,000,000 or 200,000,000 by the end of this week, but I was pretty much off for I had not calculated in the amount of theaters that the movie would be pulled from by this time of the film's cycle.

At its current rate, if it keeps up, GODZILLA could finally cross the 200 million line by the end of next week, or a little bit over into the week after. By Monday or Tuesday, I expect us to hit 197 million. By Thursday, 198 million, by Saturday, 199 million. And by the next upcoming week, the big 200 million walk. It'll be a tough climb I'm sure, with Transformers hitting the market. But hopefully we'll make it into the winner circle!


GODZILLA has done great business in China, but looks to be slowing down with the release of Transformers. It doesn't look like it will do Pacific Rim business, probably because the film has no grounds of China implemented. It could still hit $100 million, but that remains to be seen.

EDIT: Well Gormaru Island, Godzilla has hit $197,085,000, quite a surprising nudge, but a great one none the less! This leaves the possibility that GODZILLA could finally hit 200 million potentially by the end of this week, or at least by the coming of next Sunday. Hopefully the king won't slow down like The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which has finally hit 200 million!!!

GODZILLA currently rests at $198,355,185 domestically, it's pushing ever so closely toward the 200 million mark. Potentially, by the end of this week, with a more focused observation, the film could hit the 199 million mark. And if it does, then by next week, GODZILLA could stomp across the finish line.
Either way, it depends on how many theaters are still screening the movie. So don't expect the big 199 number to hit until maybe this Saturday. The earliest could be Saturday. At the latest? Next Monday.

Either way, Godzilla is having slightly better luck in closing in on the number than The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

In terms of international waters, the film has slowed down and lost a lot of steam. $292,000,000 so far. At the very least, Japan will be able to push GODZILLA over the 300,000,000 mark and help cross the film over the 500 million line more easily. The film has already had its Hollywood Premiere in Japan, which had been praised quite well(Along with Gareth Edwards) in respecting the true spirit of Godzilla. With luck, hopefully Japan will push GODZILLA to great numbers once it is released next week.

In terms of Worldwide total right now: $490,355,185
The film is simply less than 10 million bones away from 500 million. We'll definitely hit that mark very soon once Japan has the film.

GODZILLA 2014's Box Office has been updated, and as it stands domestically, GODZILLA rests at a
booming $199,019,979. That's right folks, we're at the very edge of the finish line in crossing 200 million! Godzilla had struck the number yesterday, Sunday, so it looks like the weekend numbers had really helped out.

If the movie can build up over 500,000 bones before Friday, than when the weekend finally takes off, GODZILLA will very well cross the 200 million line!

Internationally, the profit from that has been calculated from last week, so expect that sometime soon. As a reminder, GODZILLA opens in Japan this Friday, soon we'll be crossing over to 500 million!

Box Office Update:

As you all knew from the previous update, Godzilla had finally stormed across the big 199 million mark. A fantastic leap! However, if GODZILLA were to cross over to the 200 million line quickly. It would have to earn at least 500,000 before Friday, and the weekend draw. But unfortunately, GODZILLA rests at
$199,317,206 million, an expect number now that the movie is officially in secondary theaters. Secondary theaters pull in less money than first going theaters. So this kind of power down was expected.

However, it still stands that GODZILLA should rampage across 200 million next week. If the weekend numbers are good, that reality will be made real early on.
Although, I want to point out, that there is still the possibility of weekend numbers hitting higher than anticipated, and making up an entire million completely. It has happened before multiple times. So it is still a possibility.

But if I were to make an estimate, I think GODZILLA might flame up a good 400-500,000 this weekend. We'll be lucky to hit anything higher. But none the less, we'll find out where the film lands on Monday.

Internationally, GODZILLA is now officially released in Japan, this is a proud yet cautionary moment. GODZILLA doing well in Japan matters a lot, critically to fans, and financially to box offices. Reviews will no doubt show the split line between fans. But hopefully Japan will be generally accepting and open to Godzilla's latest incarnation. Box Office-wise, GODZILLA will being having a final round of atomic life coursing through its veins, pushing us over 500 million no doubt thanks to Japan(And potentially any remaining territories left that still shows the movie). While 600 million is unlikely, hopefully the kaiju king will rest at an easy 530 or 550 million. Expect Japan's weekend take to be implemented on Monday.

‘Godzilla’ Dominates Box Office in Japan With $6.9 Mil. Debut
“Godzilla” roared in Japan this weekend, with the monster picture topping box office charts.

The film debuted to an estimated $6.9 million across 27 screens. The opening is on par with “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” which grossed $54.2 million in Japan, and more than double that of “Pacific Rim,” which went on to make $14.5 million in the country.

It was a home-coming for the scaly beast. The Legendary Entertainment release was distributed by Toho in Japan, the company behind the original Godzilla movie. The distributor and exhibitor is enjoying the strongest year in its history, putting up a record first half box office of $365 million.

Warner Bros. handled the international rollout for the other territories. So far, “Godzilla” has earned $498.3 million worldwide.

You've read correctly, GODZILLA has opened up to a strong box office in Japan, and has the possibility of roaring up a powerful finish as the movie rampages through its final territory. It remains to be seen as to how much destruction that the king will reign this upcoming week, but hopefully it'll be a monstrous one.

Internationally, thanks to Japan, the foreign numbers rest at 299,000,000, thus raising the worldwide total to $498,317,206. We're close to crossing the big 500 million mark. A mark that even Legendary knows will be crossed.

Domestically, numbers from the weekend will be implemented Monday tomorrow. We will learn if the movie has crossed 200 million tomorrow, or if it will cross sometime this week overall. With secondary theaters in play, I wouldn't be surprised if we don't hit 200 million. But if we're close to it, at least by 400 or 500,000, than Godzilla will no doubt stomp across before the arrival of Friday.
